Facebook Social Plug-ins and Drupal
Of the seven specified, three of Facebook's social plug-ins are available in the "Facebook social plugins integration" module for Drupal 6.x. I implemented all three on this Web site. While there are still some open issues, the three are working..
The three plug-ins that are currently implemented are:
- Like Box - In the right column of all the pages, except for the Accessibility page, you will see the Like Box displaying the status messages of the PageVisions fan page. For this plug-in, you need the Facebook Page ID for the fan page to which you wish to connect. The Page ID is the number at the end of the URL for the fan page. You do not need the whole URL, just the number. The one limitation is that you can only link to a single fan page. However, it is a great way to promote your Facebook fan page. When a Facebook user clicks the Like icon, they automatically become a fan of the page.
- Comments - If you got this far, you will see the Facebook Comment plug-in at the end of this article. The Facebook Comments plug-in provides an alternative to Drupal's Comments module. Facebook actually stores the comments. However, the person making a comment does not need a Facebook account. A Facebook user can have the comment posted to their profile page. The plug-in does show the photos of the Facebook user's friends who have also posted a comment. Clicking the Like button does require a Facdebook connection. If a Facebook user just clicks the Like and does not post a comment, an entery is made on their profile page that they like this page. If they post a comment, both the comment and a link to the page appear on their profile page.
- Like Button - The Like Button appears on pages for which comments are not solicited, such as the Services page. It could also be used on pages where you wish to use Drupal comments. When a Facebook user clicks the Like Button, they have the ability to also enter a comment. This comment only appears on their Facebook profile page. It does not appear as part of Drupal comments. In my option, this can confuse users. To see the Facebook comments associated with this page, we need the Activity Feed social plug-in, which is yet to be implented for Drupal.
For these plug-ins to work, you need a Facebook Application Key. The Facebook documentation does not make it obvious, but the URL is http://developers.facebook.com/setup. The Site Name field is for listing purposes. The site URL must be correct for the plug-ins to work. If you do not already have a developer account, Facebook will ask you to create one. To make access to the application information easier, just use your Facebook user ID. Once you complete the form, you will get an application key. In the future, you can access application information by going to your Home page in Facebook, click on Applications in the left sidebar, and then click on Developer in the next screen.
Are these Facebook plug-in's biased towards driving traffic to Facebook? The answer is an overwhelming "hell yes they are." Driving traffic to Facebook is far easier than driving traffic to your site from Facebook. It is basically a one way street, unless someone looks under the Info tag in your profile or fan page. How many times have you clicked on the Info tab?
